The Story of God's Love for You

I love Sally Lloyd-Jones. Her Jesus Storybook Bible is an essential book for the library of every child- from birth through adolescence. What makes the Jesus Storybook Bible different and dare I say better than any other Toddler or Children’s Bible is that Lloyd-Jones keeps the theme of the gospel running throughout. She (rightfully) views the Bible as one great love story that continues from beginning to end, rather than divide it up as a book of dozens of disconnected tales. Of course the common theme throughout Lloyd-Jones’s telling of Scripture is that the Bible is the story of God’s love for you. Everything the Bible records from Genesis to Revelation is about a loving God who sent a Rescuer, Jesus, to bring us back to Him.

The Story of God’s Love for You is the exact same text that is used in the Jesus Storybook Bible, just without all of the pictures. It is repackaged in a more sophisticated manner, making it more appealing to people of all ages. When I requested this book, I did not pay close enough attention to the description of it— meaning, I didn’t know that it was the exact same text from the Storybook Bible. However, once I began to read it, I knew the text was familiar. That’s when I looked back at the description and realized that it was indeed the same writings, just presented in a different manner. Was I upset? Surprisingly, no! In fact, I found new delight and interest as I continued reading the book from cover to cover. I’ve read bits and pieces of our Storybook Bible to my kids, but somehow, when reading it cover to cover in this format, I could not put it down. It truly is the story of the Bible, of God’s love, from beginning to end.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book to… anyone! It would make a great gift for a young teen, a child/grandchild going off to college, a friend in a difficult situation, or for yourself. After all, everyone needs to know that God loves them. This book gives such a beautiful and concise account of all the ways God shows his love. One more thing I must note: in all of the publisher promo about this book, a great deal was made about the award-winning illustrator Jago being a part of this. I was definitely surprised to see that there is only one— yes, one— teeny, tiny illustration in the entire book, and it is the header used at the beginning of each chapter. Its a small picture of a tree, and the same image is repeated in each chapter. So if you are a Jago fan and would be buying the book to see his art, you will be deeply disappointed. I personally have no idea who Jago is, so that didn’t matter to me. I was just really puzzled as to why so much fuss was made about a quarter-sized drawing of a tree.
