December was an incredible month. You may notice a few new faces in this month's InstaGlance... that's my family!!! We spent two glorious weeks in Chicago, celebrating my bro's graduation from Univeristy of Chicago, eating delicious meals, playing games, riding the El, eating, cooking, reading, playing in the snow, and just simply being together. I can think of no greater time in recent years with my family than this past Christmas... it was truly magical! My friend, Heather welcomed her precious, perfect new baby boy, Jack. I was inspired by a painting to get out my blank canvases again, and I learned that I really, really, really love oysters with champagne mignonette. We had a White Christmas and came home to a beautiful winter wonderland. I discovered a love for bristle blocks, too.
The end of the holidays can only mean one thing...that the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is about to be upon us. That is, of course, Award show season. The wonderful time of the year, when nominations are announced for best picture, best actor, best actress, etc... and the whole world is a flutter with predictions and last minute cram sessions at the theater to see of this year's potential winners. (At least that's what I did before I had kids. Now I catch them on Netflix or Redbox months after the Oscars... but whatever, right?) Fashion houses fling themselves at the feet of every hot acotress- new or seasoned- in the hopes of having that one "it" dress that Joan Rivers can't stop raving about. As this year wraps up and a new one is about to begin, I'm taking a few moments to reflect on my personal faves from 2012. A "Best Of" awards list from 2012, if you will. Here are some of my faves (at least the ones I can remember)... what are your's?
Best Movie... Hunger Games. (This is either a testament to how FEW movies I saw in theatre this year (hint: the only other one I saw on the big screen in 2012 we "What to Expect When You're Expecting." If you've seen that one, you know why Hunger Games wins in this category), or proof that a really good book to movie adaptation is entirely possible. Its probably a lot of both those factors. Oscar worthy? Probably not. But definitely good enough to make it tops in my book.)
Best Book (fiction)... House of Velvet and Glass by Katherine Howe. I'd been anticapating this book ever since I read her first book a few years ago (Physick Book of Deliverance Dane). A mystical/historical fiction book with nods to the Titanic, this was an engulfing read that didn't disappoint!
Best Book (non-fiction)... Clapton, by Eric Clapton. I read several musicians' autobiographies this year (including Steven Tyler's "Does the Noise in my Head Bother You?") and Clapton's was by far the best retelling of his life's story. Honest about his life in a way that made me feel like I knew him, I was fascinated with his creativity, ability to play despite crippling addictions, and his seeking journey for meaning. Tidbits about the behind-the-scenes of several classic songs (like how he wrote the Beatles' hit, "Here Comes The Sun" with George, out in his field in England) were intriguing and it was nice to see an artist who had truly found peace and purpose in his life, despite the years of darkness.
Best Song... Hallelujah, What A Savior by Phillip P. Bliss This is actually an old hymn, written in 1875 that has been recently revived in many Reformed churches around the country. Powerful, classic, true. A close second favorite song is "Jesus Come" by Evan Wickham. I can't much handle current pop music these days... too "poppy" and overtly sexual. Pretty sure this means I'm old.
Best Netflix/Amazon Prime... Downton Abbey. Season 1 was on Netflix, and I found Season 2 free to live stream on Amazon Prime. Can't wait for it to start up again in January!!!
Best TV Show... Without a doubt, Homeland. I will defend that as the best show on television right now to anyone who says otherwise. Claire Danes is simply stunning, and the writing is edgy, fascinating and ever-twisting.
Best Blog Post... The stats say that my most-read blog post of 2012 was one I wrote for the Ministry Wives round up at Kelly's Korner. (It got 747 views) That was followed by my King Tut Headdress Tutorial (with 221 views) and the Halloween Costume blog with 200 views.
Best Recipe... Soba Soup with Spinach. AMAZING. Followed closely by the strawberry cupcakes I made for Gia's first birthday party.
Best Meal Out... Maybe its because this is fresh on my mind, but after my brother's graduation, we ate at an amazing Tapas bar in Chicago called Ba-Ba-Reeba. We all ordered two tapas, everyone's selection different, and ate continuosly for two hours. It was amazing.
Best Sanity Saver/ Best Moment of My Week... Girls' Night! We started this almost a year ago, in Febrauary, and ever since, Tuesday nights are our sacred Girls' Nights with my girlfriends. It is good for our hearts, minds, stomachs and souls. I love my girls.
Best Idea/Gizmo/Tool... THIS "Mom Hook" grocery bag carrier. Makes bringing in the groceries so much easier.
Best App... Do I even need to say it? Instagram. Love capturing the pictures on this. I also love its easy upload to Flickr, so I can make the Instaglance collages that I do.
Best Website... I've been loving Pinterest off and on this year. Came in really handy when looking for party ideas for Gia's first birthday and Heather's Little Man Shower.
Best Fashion Piece... I am loving the boots & jeans look for winter right now!!!
Best Historical Moment... This was a big year for many different reasons, but one of them was the 2012 election. While I wasn't thrilled with the outcome, I proudly voted and continue to believe in this country in which we live. This was also the Centennial year for the Titanic tragedy. I'm a history buff that fell in love with the Titanic in the 90's (no small thanks to Leo DiCap) and enjoyed the many historical references in everything from my favorite book (see above) to my favorite Netflix find (see above).
Best Holiday... Without a doubt, it was Christmas in Chicago with my family. So many wonderful memories and such a great time.
Best Gift... the HUGE dining table that Sean & a friend are making me for Christmas! I can't wait to get it, and have all our friends over for a meal!
Best Memory... Christmas in Chicago with my family.
Best Photo... This is too hard to pick, but I really love these two:
Judging by the 85 "likes" and 20 comments on Facebook, I think that one is a definite favorite!!!
Best Accomplishment... Breastfeeding exclusively to 14 months. Looking back, I still cannot believe that Gia & I made it so long- especially because she never took a bottle!!! So grateful that I was able to do that!
Best Crafty Project... I had a great time figuring out how to make pajama pants, and really enjoyed making them for my nieces and Sean, Gia & I for Christmas!
So there are some of my BEST OF'S for 2012.... what are some of yours???

The restaurant itself is simply amazing... oversized photos of hay bales and green pastures light up on white paneled walls. The rustic wood accents made the place feel cozy & inviting... almost like being back on my grandparents' cattle ranch in Eastern Oklahoma. Our waiter, Scott (or Scoot, as we tried to call him) was incredible. Friendly and knowledgable, with awesome facial hair to boot!
We decided to forgo the frozen mint julep (as Scoot told us it was an acquired taste, so best not to order it if we're not familiar with it) and opted for winter lagers and a crisp Riesling instead. Although in restrospect, I do wish I'd taken him on ordering their specialty cocktail, the Bear Hug (Templeton Rye, Cinnamon Simple Syrup, Lemon juice & Ginger Beer). Oh, well. Next time. Because there will be a next time.

Shortly after being seated, Alfonzo brought two bowls of House-made BBQ Chips and another bowl of house-made sweet bread & butter pickles. OH MY... these alone are worth a trip to q! I could not get enough, and was grateful to see that when our first bowls of chips were long gone, two more overflowing bowls of golden fried deliciousness promptly emerged. They were sprinkled with the same dry rub that the meat was bbq'd with and it was amazing. The pickles tasted just like the ones my ranching grandma used to pickle straight from her extensive backyard garden. I have so many great memories of watching Gran boil the jars, carefully fill each one with cucumbers and seasoning, then close the lid and lower them back into the boiling water, waiting for the "pop" of the seal. These took me right back there!
We started with appetizers- Fried Green Tomatoes and House Bacon Cheddar Hush Puppies. Oh my. Despite being my all-time favorite movie, this was my first time tasting Fried Green Tomatoes. They did not disappoint! I can't speak much to the Cheddar Hush Puppies, as I'm allergic to cow's milk, but suffice it to say, they were gone before the waiter could remove his hands from the bowl.

I was a little concerned, because up until this point, we had not even placed our entree orders! I thought of most other restaurants that take forever to get your main meal out to you... but never fear! q is quick to keep the food coming! Sean & I split the q2 platter... one pulled meat (pork shoulder for us) and a 1/2 slab of ribs or chicken (we got 1/2 slab of the St. Louis ribs). David & Leila got the St. Louis ribs, and Megan & Eric went for the q2, also choosing the STL ribs and brisket. For sides, we got cole slaw, Meg & Eric got buttermilk mashed potatoes and David & Leila got Kobe beef baked beans. They also got a poblano corn muffin, which looked like a huge slice of golden cake! My slaw was delicious, and the girls said the mashed potatoes were the best they'd ever had. David's Kobe beans were out of this world, too. My favorite part of the meal (BBQ aside) was the pickled red onions that came on the side of every plate. I have a huge soft spot in my heart (er, stomach?) for pickled red onions, as they're a staple my family has been making for years. These were nothing but fabulous, and dare I say- may rival my Gran's?

The real star, of course, was the bbq. It was a dry rub bbq, so all the sauces came on the side. Sean asked Scoot if they had a huge smoker in the back, and he quickly replied, "Yep! You wanna come back and see it?" I thought Sean was going to pee his pants with excitement! Scoot warned it was a working kitchen, so be careful, but it was a highlight of their dinner! Scoot spoke very highly of the restaurant's master-mind chef, Lee Ann Whippen. She's won numerous awards all over the country for her bbq, and it was indeed excellent!

Sean & I used to live in North Carolina and became huge fans of the vinegar-based style of bbq there. q has a delicious North Carolina sauce, so we were thrilled when Scoot told us that they had just in the past week begun selling bottles of their famously delectable sauces. And at very affordable $8, we were quick to snatch up a bottle!

While the food was delicious, what I loved most was spending time with my siblings. I nearly got misty-eyed when my brother picked up the tab himself. *sniff* He's getting so big. Ok, ok... I know he's nearly mid-twenties, a college graduate and getting ready to make a big move to Houston for a big job, but in my mind & heart's eye, he's still 10 years old. I know he probably hates that, but that's the age he was when I left home and went away to college. I missed a lot of his growing up years, and didn't get to know a lot of him while he was in high school. But I am so proud of the young man he has become. He has a gentle, kind heart and is the hardest worker I know. He is smart, giving, generous and selfless. He takes after my dad in many of those qualities, and for that I am so grateful. I love him and am just so proud of him and beyond blessed to be able to have precious times like this with him. Thank you, David for a memorable dinner and for being the best little brother a big sister could ask for.
I've come across a couple of really neat things online this week that I wanted to share/document here so that you can check them out, but also so I don't forget them myself! So here are some great links to check out if you have a few extra minutes in your day.
This is a blog that a new member at our church writes. He is a sports writer by trade, and he's been documenting his journey to Christ on this blog. It all began with a request from his 6-year old daugther to "learn more about God" and has led to the greatest decision of his life-- for both himself and his family. There are just a handful of posts, so it shouldn't take too long to read through them. His writing is excellent, raw, honest and stirring. His sentiments on "organized religion" and a hesitancy to share the Gospel concisely echo the fears of many non-believers. What makes Eric different is that he had the strength and guts to power through the discomfort in search of the Truth. Add this one to your reader, as his journey is just beginning! They're an amazing family & we're so excited to get to know them better!
An organization committed to helping boys who are trafficked for sex slavery. Very few resources exist for helping young boys who are victims of this modern-day slavery atrocity. They are currently raising funds to start the first year of their healing house. Just $50,000 will staff the first house (in another country) with two counselors, houseparents, a teacher and a guard. They want to raise that $50,000 in just 50 days- a task that is easily do-able through the giving of God's people! I personally know many of the men involved in this organization and can honestly say that I have never seen another organization with such quality of Godly men. You can rest assured that your donations will be handled honorably and will be used to its fullest potential. Take a minute to check out their webiste... behind every box is a story and the story must change. Pray about how you can be a part of changing their stories.
Hand Drawn Map of New York by Jenni Sparks
I love art of all kinds, and this hand drawn map of NYC is no exception. A truly beautiful labor of time-intesive love!
Retooning the Nativity (video)
A fun look at the accuracies & inaccuracies of our modern-day telling of the Nativity.
This is currently my FAVORITE fun Christmas song. How have I lived in Indy over a year and just discovered this Acapella group? LOVE them... listen to this song all the way through, or look them up on Spotify. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
I started Advent with Ann's A Holy Experience, but quickly realized that was far too much for Gia at this age. So this one is must shorter but still just as potent with the Gospel. This is a PDF print out that you can do with your family, too!
I Love Infographics....
I'm obsessed with infographics at the moment. They're so fun! So here are a few that I found that are just cool....
What Can I Do With A Degree in Psychology (for my sis-in-law, Audz)
Millennials (Very interesting comparison of generations with emphasis on Millennials)
Fitness Inforgraphics (5 amazing infog's on fun facts and stuff)
Unwatned Credit/Debit Card Charges (Check your statements, people!)
And my favorite find of this week is a new iPad app called Zite. Its like a personalized magazine/newspaper reader... you put what you're interested in and it selects articles for you! I like it because there are a lot of articles I would have never have found otherwise!
Happy Monday, y'all!!!
This was a crazy month! It feels like it went by in a flash, but in reality, we did a lot of stuff in November! Gia is becoming more and more of a little lady... she loves trying on my shoes & jewelry. It is the cutest thing. She's even wearing headbands again- voluntarily! I bought a bunch of fabric to make pj pants for our family for Christmas and pulled out all my winter clothes! Yay for a "new" wardrobe! We went to a fabulous reception at the Indianapolis Country Club for our friend, Jen who was inducted into the Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Fame. She still to this day holds a ridiculous amount of records for the state. We voted. Gia will vote for the first time in 2032- that's crazy. Sean & I got away for an amazing weekend at an Acts 29 bootcamp in St. Louis. Lots of QuikTrip was consumed. We had Friendsgiving with the best group of friends ever. We had our first snow of the season, and gathered with family (and jello shots) for Thanksgiving. We had to leave our family in Cincinnati a day early after Thanksgiving because poor little G was sick. It turned out to be a good thing, because we had to take Gia in to the ER the day after Thanksgiving. She wound up staying overnight because she was so dehydrated. It was torturous for all of us-- she had to get catheterized and stuck for blood draws and an IV... it was awful. Thankfully, Aunt Kiki (Caitlin) came to bring the smiles. I got sick while at the hospital, too (as in literally, I puked ALL OVER the bathroom floor) but recovered a few days later. By the end of the month, Gia was on the upswing again, and I was down for the count with a double ear infection. We pulled out some of our Christmas decor, too. All in all, it was a whirlwind of a month, but a good one!
