Wolfgang Puck has been creating elaborate custom menus for Oscar night for 21 years now. And perhaps his most famous contribution to this star-studded night in Hollywood is the Golden Oscar Chocolates that the stars get to take home!! Several years ago, I had a big Oscar party where I went ALL OUT. That was the first year I tried making my own Golden Oscar Chocolates, and it is something I have done ever since!!! Here's a quick video I made that shows how I do them! (I ordered the award mold from Europe. The actual Oscar dude is copyrighted so nothing of its likeness is sold in the States. Boo on you, party poopers!)
There are few sorrows so deep as that of losing a child. An even more unique twist is losing a child that you never really got the chance to know. Whether through miscarriage, stillbirth or infant loss, the tragedy of an infant child’s death is great. (Not greater than any other loss, but certainly different.) When our first daughter, Whitney, was stillborn, I found myself in a unique position of grief. Though by God’s grace I did get to hold her in my arms, kiss her sweet lips and keep a lock of her beautiful dark curls, many people around me didn’t understand why I took the loss so hard. After all, she’d never even said a word, uttered a noise, or even took a breath in my arms. And yet it was because of exactly those reasons that the grief was so strange. How could I love and grieve for someone whom I have never really known? Kathe Wunnenberg’s book Grieving the Child I Never Knew speaks directly to those nuances of grief associated with such a child loss.
Having lost four children of her own, Wunnenberg is no stranger to grieving the death of a child. She is intimately connected to the grief that such a loss can cause. But within her own story of love and loss is an underlying message of hope and healing. It runs throughout the entirety of this devotional, and is almost palpable in her words that are written with such love. This book is a series of 31 devotions, broken down into different parts, or stages, if you will. They are: Hiding, Suffering, Questioning, Forgiving, Relating, Seeking and Sharing Your Story. Every single one of these areas of focus is critical to finding complete healing thorough Christ. And I especially love that she ends the book with encouragement to share your story. It is through the stories of other women who shared similar losses that I gained the strength to carry Whitney until God took her home. Sharing your story of grief and grace and hope are critical— it is so so necessary. Each day’s devotional has a short narrative, followed by a prayer (because let’s be real: sometimes we don’t even know the words to pray) and questions to help you think through the grieving process. She entitled these questions “Steps to Healing.” The questions have space to be answered in the book, but I liked to write my answers in a journal. It gave me more room to write and feel more open in what I needed to process.
In addition to using this as a 31-day devotional book, she give 7 other ways that this book can be helpful: A Quick Pick-Me-Up for when emotions rise, Table for Two (conversation starter with a close friend or spouse), Grief Group Discussion Guide, Small-Group Bible Study, A Gift that Lasts, A Resource Book for Pastors and Counselors, and a Prayer Guide. There is even an index page that has listed the devotionals that have readings pertaining to specific events/days like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
Though this is a difficult subject to write/read about, it is one that is not to be ignored. Though it may be a difficult conversation to have with a friend who has lost a child, believe me, they will be grateful you took time to mention their child. If you are looking for a gift to give a friend who has has such a loss, I cannot recommend this book enough. It is truly a great gift that can help lead them from grief to hope.
***Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.***
Rarely have I ever read a book that felt like both a Cliff Notes version and an expanded and revised edition of a previous book. Marie Kondo’s accompaniment to her best-selling book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, entitled Spark Joy, is just that— both Cliff Notes and Expanded edition. While some may be quick to judge Spark Joy as a financial gain piggyback to the successful first volume, I would challenge them that Spark Joy is anything but superfluous. In fact, it fleshes out much of the original material from Life Changing Magic that was missing in the first book.
Spark Joy is an illustrated guide to her world-renowned KonMari Method. It includes cute step-by-step illustrations for everything from shirts to socks, plus drawings of perfectly organized drawers and closets. I particularly enjoyed reading Spark Joy because it gave very concise summaries of the overall chapters in Life Changing Magic. While I still would say it is necessary to read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up in order to fully grasp the KonMari method and reasoning behind that method, Spark Joy is a great companion to have on hand when you are actually going through the process of KonMari-ing your home (and life). Spark Joy also includes advice on frequently asked questions. These were my favorite parts of this book, because it really gives a glimpse into how Kondo’s mind works. And when you can understand (or vaguely understand) her thinking behind the method, it makes the KonMari method of decluttering almost second nature.
One unexpected component of this book is that it includes a lot of practical encouragement. Encouragement for those times when you feel overwhelmed, when you don’t know exactly which items to keep and which to discard, and encouragement to keep going until the entire process is complete. She is realistic in her expectations, but in true Japanese fashion, those expectations are set to the highest level. As a pseudo-client of Kondo (because you are holding her book), you feel her gentle urges to purge the necessary to truly get to what is beautiful and joy-sparking in your life.
While I must admit I have yet to being KonMari-ing my home, I will say reading this companion book is a must. It is motivational, practical and simply delightful to read. If you liked The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, or maybe haven’t even read that one yet, this is a great place to start. You can purchase it here on Amazon.

Everyone has pain at some point or another in their life. For some, suffering is just a season. It comes and it goes. But for others, pain is a way of life, something they live with every day. We all grow weary, weak and tired. This world is not our home and there are hardships that batter the hulls of our ships until we are sinking, taking on more water from the storm than we can handle. Saundra Dalton-Smith’s book Come Empty is precisely the life boat needed to help us weather the storms of life. She invites us to pour out life’s hurts and receive God’s healing love. I found this renewal on page after page of this beautiful book.
If your problems are related relationships, emotions, illness or some other type of hardship, this book can help guide you toward the healing and renewing power of Jesus Christ. It is divided up into an 80-day journey through all kinds of topics: Relationship with God, Relationships with Others, Negative Emotions, Identity, Change, Illness, Positive Emotions and finally, Gratitude. To read through this book truly is a journey, a beautiful journey written to draw out areas of our lives that need strength, healing and renewal.
One can read this book in any number of ways: day by day, as guided on each page; By topic, as it relates to your life; or as a discussion guide for a close group of friends. Each day contains a paragraph from the author about something that has happened in her life, something relatable to us all. This first section is called “Your Heart’s Cry.” It is then followed by “His Response,” or what God has to say to your heart’s cry. There is additional Scripture reading followed by “Going Deeper Questions.” These questions are probing, heart-felt and designed to help you dig deeper into your own soul. These would be great discussion questions in a small group or used as journaling prompts in your personal quiet time. The day closes with a simple prayer. I love the simple prayers that accompany each day. In fact, many times I wrote them out on notecards and kept them in my purse or in my Bible.
This is a beautiful book that is relevant to women of all ages and in all different stages of life. It is not written to any specific demographic which makes it universally helpful to all. As the back cover promotes, “Each devotion gives new vision and perspective when you’re hindered by emotional blind spots, and leads you to experience God’s peace and wholeness.” I could certainly feel God’s peace and wholeness while on my journey through this book. And if that is something your heart is crying out for, I hope this book will lead you in the same way! You can purchase it here on Amazon.

Its a little past the middle of the week, but I hope these little bits of magic help get you through to the weekend! Here's what I'm loving this week: (hint: its not the blizzard that is currently outside my window!)
food // Sausage, Potato and Spinach Soup
Speaking of freaking cold snow, is there anything better than a big pot of warm, hearty soup to offset a blizzard? I think not! I cannot even estimate the tremendous number of times I've made this soup this winter. And now we've progressed to making a double batch each time we make it, which is almost weekly. I actually discovered this soup from my sister-in-law, Anne. I was going over to her house for a moms-only hang time and as I arrived, she was making this soup. However, right as I rang her doorbell, she dumped several tablespoons of red pepper flakes into the pot on accident! The darn lid wasn't on the season shaker anymore! We wound up ordering chinese take-out but the soup smelled so delicious that I had to try it at home! It really is that good. A few tips: I omit the red pepper flakes altogether and buy mild italian sausage, because I am a spice weenie. I also sub whole fat coconut milk (the kind that comes in a can) for the heavy cream because I'm allergic to dairy. Its SO GOOD!!
blog // Made Heirs
Keeping it in the family this week, this is my sister's adoption blog. Last fall, they brought home their son & my nephew, Titus. He is thriving in his new family and doing so well. The latest big news in their family is that they are going back to China! They are going to bring home their daughter and one of Titus' best friends from the orphanage, a little girl named Mei. Her latest post entitled "Journey To Mei" is so moving that you simply must read it. If there was ever a doubt in anyone's mind that God truly has chosen a family for the orphaned, this will put that to rest. The road to Mei has not been easy or direct, but it is obvious that she is theirs! And they have not given up on bringing her home. This made me think about how we are all children of God, adopted into His family through Christ, and that He will go to great lengths to bring us home to Him. Adoption is such a beautiful picture of the Gospel.
app // MSQRD
Ok, if we're Insta or Facebook friends, you've probably seen some of the creepy pictures I posted yesterday with my faces superimposed with those of monkeys and other things. Its from this awesome new app called MSQRD. It is free in the app store, and will give you hours of giggles. The girls and I had so much fun with this. It is just plain hilarious!
So there's my mid-week magic. What fun things are getting you through the week?

So there's my mid-week magic. What fun things are getting you through the week?
What do you do when your two year old is battling a snotty nose, has been up before 6am for a week and is fighting her midday nap? Well, I don't know what you would do but I mixed up a Spark drink and ate a piece of chocolate! And now I thought I'd take a quiet minute to share some mid-week magic with you. I've noticed lots of writers and pod-casters share some form of their favorite things... The Sorta Awesome show has their "awesome of the week." Ann Voskamp shares "multivitamins for your weekend" and even Oprah has her famous favorite things. I love hearing what other people are into and new things they've discovered in their world, as that is how I have found some of my new favorite things. So in the spirit of sharing all the good stuff, here's what's been inspiring me in my Mid-Week Magic:
CD // Joey + Rory Hymns
I don't know if you've been following the amazing & inspiring story of Joey Feek, but she is absolutely incredible. She and her husband are country music artists, but just recently Joey was diagnosed with terminal cancer. They also have a 2 year old little girl named Indiana. Joey's life on earth is very near its end, and yet she remains a faithful inspiration to her family and a beautiful example of faith in Christ. So when I heard this album was releasing last week, I had to buy it. I actually bought it for myself for a Valentine's gift from my husband (he was appreciative) and I have not stopped playing it in the car. It is full of simple, beautiful hymns that we all know and love. Every week in my Bible Study Fellowship class, we open by singing several hymns. My girls are even learning these timeless hymns in their BSF classes. This has inspired me to want to teach my girls even more of these traditional hymns, as they are so full of rich biblical truths. As I was playing this CD in the car, I could hear echoes of my grandmothers' voices ringing in my ears. They both used to hum and sing these songs when I was a little girl. In fact, this CD was so sentimental for me that I had to buy two additional copies and send them to my grandparents! I've also recommended this to my BSF leader who has in turn bought it and loves it. We listen to it in the car all the time-- and Gia has declared "I'll fly away" to be her favorite new song. "Jesus Loves Me" is also on this CD and the girls love singing it. Other songs include "Old Rugged Cross", "I Surrender All", "It Is Well With My Soul", "How Great Thou Art" and "Jesus Paid It All." When you know the story behind the artists singing these beautiful songs, it makes them all the more meaningful to see these hymns lived out. (Here's Gia singing her favorite:)

I mentioned Bible Study Fellowship above. That is my next mid-week magic to share with you. This is my second year being part of a BSF class and it is absolutely incredible. BSF has classes all over the world-- you can go to their website to find a class near you. In fact, when I was a little girl, my mom attended and lead some BSF classes! They've been around for more than 50 years, so my girls are now 3rd generation BSFers! Each year (they run Sept-May) you study a different book or books of the Bible. This year the study is Revelation. Last year we studied the life of Moses (which included the Pentateuch). These studies are rich, in-depth, challenging and life-changing. They have an incredible kids' program in which my girls have already learned so much. The coolest part is, your kids learn exactly what you are learning just in kid-appropriate language. So that means yes, even my 2 year old is learning about Revelation this year! It is so exciting to me to be able to talk to my kids about such deep spiritual truths even though they are still young. Next year BSF will be going through the book of John. Look up a class on the website to find one in your area and then find out when their next Welcome Day is. That is when you will register for the Fall class and find out more about the program. It is a commitment, for sure. You are expected to actually be in the Word every day of the week, and to have your "homework" study completed. I find this kind of accountability to be exactly what I need in order to actual be living and breathing that Bread of life that is the Bible. I really cannot say enough about the program.... let me know if you have any questions about it. It truly is amazing!!!
My final tidbit of mid-week magic to share with you is this new-ish show called "I'll Have What Phil's Having." I discovered it several months ago and mentioned it on Facebook but thought it definitely worthy of another mention on the blog. I believe you can find it streaming on Netflix, or you can watch episodes on your computer at PBS.com. If you like Anthony Bourdain, you'll love this slightly more reverent and witty PBS show starring the writer of "Everybody Loves Raymond" as he travels to some of the world's great cities, eating good food. He's not a chef, so its less snobby than a chef-y food tour. Just a funny guy appreciating great food in beautiful places. Fair warning: wanderlust will follow. I may have definitely had to leave the room at the end of the Italy episode. Was getting a little too real and "dusty" in the room. Phil says "The problem with the rest of the world is that it isn't Italy." Amen. and Amen. Sadly, I have already finished all the episodes... I hope there's another season!
So there you have it, my mid-week magic. What things are getting you through the week?
I'm reading Elizabeth Gilbert's book "Big Magic" and it is fascinating and inspiring. (Or should I say, I was reading it until the Library check out on my Kindle ended and it took it away from me! Poof! Out of my hands. Back to the waiting list... #87.) Its a book on creativity and cultivating the creativity inside. I'm becoming more aware of the creativity of others around me and marveling at individuality God has placed inside each of us. So I thought I would share just a few brief things that are inspiring me this week...

Cristina Colli's Instagram feed is beautiful and inspiring. Its adding a much needed burst of color and spring to my days right now, as we're weathering grey skies and temps in the teens. I'm so ready for spring!

Podcast // What Should I Read Next //
This new podcast from my wanna-be spirit animal, Anne Bogel (Modern Mrs. Darcy) was an instant connection for me! I started with the latest episode where she plays literary matchmaker for Tsh Oxenreider (another one of my favorite people). On each episode, she asks her guest a series of questions: 3 books they loved, 1 book they hated, and what they were currently reading. From that information, she recommends 3 books they should read next. I may have just exponentially increased my "To Read" shelf on Goodreads...
Photography // Baby Ryan
I had the honor of photographing another birth this week. It is always amazing to me how God created our bodies to bear and bring forth life. Being part of a woman's birth experience is never something I take lightly... it is an honor and a sacred place to be. We are praising God for a safe delivery and a healthy baby boy! I've added some sneak peeks to my Facebook page.
So, that's my mid-week magic. What's inspiring you this week?
In my own personal story of loss, there are numerous ways in which God simply lavished his goodness on us. Not because we deserved it but simply because it is who he is. Sherri's story holds the same truths. I loved reading of the beautiful ways God gently reminded her that he is still sovereign and that she need not grieve in despair. So much of this book contained "aha" moments for me, and I wanted to share one part of her story in particular that has literally changed the way I view my world.
After hearing of a pastor who also lost his son in a drowning accident, Sherri was struggling with the question of "Why." Here is what she wrote:
"Why the children? Why, God? Why would you take the children? Why this pastor's son when he had given his life in service to You? Why me who loved Bronner and wanted him? I wanted him! There is nothing worse than losing a child! Nothing! I know You lost Your Son, but You got Him back after three days! Three days!"
And I felt a gentle stirring in my spirit. "But what about the others? They're all Mine. You're going to get a glorious reunion with your son, but I won't get that with all of Mine."
Wow. Talk about powerful. God allowed her son (and my daughter) to die so that through their death, one of God's other children might hear of his goodness and believe in Him. What a powerful testimony. For me, coming to this knowledge was worth reading the whole book. And here's the thing about Bronner: the book and Sherri's story is full of moments like this. Even if you have never lost a child, I know we have all faced suffering of some kind. If you have ever wondered "Why me, God?" or "Why her?" then this book is for you. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Is it difficult to read? At times, yes. I am not ashamed to say I cried while reading much of it. But is it worth it? Absolutely. There are nuggets of golden wisdom lying in this story, just waiting to be picked up by you and applied to your life.
In addition to the many "aha" moments Sherri's story brought about, her writing is chock full of scripture. It flowed seamlessly throughout her story, making this a book I will be sure to keep on hand for when I face future struggles and want to have some good scripture. This is a great book, which you can purchase here: Bronner. Also, I just saw on Amazon this is the #1 New Release in its category!!

This morning, as Gia was at preschool, I was folding laundry in her room. Joanna was bouncing around from Legos to baby dolls. An ordinary morning with my extraordinary blessings. I had the bedroom window shades pulled up high. Its cloudy and overcast today but I always prefer natural light to anything else. At this point in the middle of winter, I’ll take all the vitamin D I can get. As I was folding little shirts that aren’t as little as they once were, staring nonchalantly off into the world outside my window, my heart lept! It leapt with joy into my throat so quickly it brought tears up into my eyes. Just beyond the window pane is a big tree in the middle of our front yard. It gives bright green leaves in Spring, cool dark shade in the summertime and beautiful hues of yellow and orange in the Fall. But in Winter, its just there. Kinda blah. A skeleton of what its potential is, biding its time until the warmth of Spring signals new life. But today it wasn’t the dreary bare branches that caught my attention. In the moment I glanced out the window at that tree and saw beyond its seasonal dormant skeleton, I saw the tiniest glimmer of white! WHITE! A bud! It was as if overnight, the tree decided it was time to get back to work. I ran out of the house, still in my pajamas and snapped this picture as proof.
Its February 1st. Today is my sister’s birthday (hi Megan!). And it also marks the beginning of Whitney’s birth month. Her birthday is in just a few days, and at this time of year I start to tune in even closer to the whispers of God’s love. Parts of winter have kept me dormant, hibernating. And I know that Spring is still a long ways off, we’ll likely get another month of winter weather, but for today, I have a promise that new life is coming. On the day Whitney was born, it was as if Fresno rolled out the brilliant white carpet of Spring in her honor. We pulled out of our neighborhood early that Thursday morning of the 11th onto a street that was lined with beautiful white blossoming trees. Full blossoms, bouquets of white spraying forth from every branch. The streets to the hospital were completely lined with those beautiful trees. They urged us on, mile by mile, as we drove towards the hardest place of our lives. They were whispering God’s goodness even then, in the midst of death. They whispered promises of new life, rebirth, and victory over the grave.
This morning, I am grateful for the reminder that God brings new life in even the darkest seasons. This year, its just some winter blahs for me. But maybe you’re facing something harder. Something darker. Maybe this winter, death has taken something precious from you— a sister, a child, a friend, a marriage. May I just encourage you today to look out your window for a sign that new life is coming? The signs of Spring are there, if we look for them. God’s goodness is all around us, even when we don’t feel it. You are His, you are loved and we can have forever hope in life eternal with Jesus.
